When we move in to a new place, the first thing we think of is how to fill that vacant space. We want to fill that space with our stuff instead of thinking how much empty space we want to see. The same goes for presentations. We always think of ways to fill our presentation canvas with content without being mindful of the white space.

Because we’re not used to recognizing and appreciating white space, I had to learn to see it and use it differently in my presentations. It is as important as any other design element in your presentation. White space, when used properly, can help you achieve harmony and guide viewers’ eyes from one part of the design to another. It can also make your design look simpler.

In his very famous book, PresentationZen Design, Garr Reynolds teaches us about an important strategy to deal with white space in our presentations:

“Learning to first see white space is the first step toward designing effective visuals; restraint concerning what you add to that space is the second step.”

To achieve harmony and hierarchy in your presentation, avoid clutter and noise by creating a balance between white space and your design elements.
